Classical Kemenche:
The kemençe is a stringed instrument with a spherical body. It is used to play both folk and classical music. The kemençe has had a profound influence on many different cultures throughout history. The music produced with this instrument has an aura that connects both listeners and performers. The instrument's pitch is much harder and more percussive, and its sound is very similar to the human voice.
Kemenche Structure :
The structure of the instrument varies slightly from country to country. The classical kemenche is divided into four basic parts:
- body
- handle
- bract
- wires
The classical kemenche is a small musical instrument, 40-41 cm long and 14-15 cm wide, played with the nails. The half-pear-shaped body, elliptical head , and neck are carved into the kemenche. It is made from a single piece of wood. The classical kemenche weighs approximately 1.5 kg.
The body of the kemenche is entirely hand carved, made from mulberry, black mulberry, maple, juniper, spruce or plum wood and is produced within 3-15 days , depending on its type and features.
It consists of two large D- shaped holes with rounded edges on its chest. The instrument also has a " back groove ." The strings are 7-10 mm higher than the fingerboard; the tailpiece is placed on the left knee, and the strings of the kemençe are held perpendicular to the chest or placed between the knees. Sounds are produced not by pressing the strings with the fingertips, as in most stringed instruments, but by gently pushing them together with the fingernails.
How to Use the Instrument :
Kamanche models come in a wide variety. Some kamanche users prefer a simple, understated look, while others prefer designs crafted with decorative artistry.
Its soft and comfortable tone makes the kamanche a suitable instrument for solo and ensemble use. Notes are reached by touching the fingernails from the left, working their way down the strings. The player places the kamanche on their knee and, instead of using the bow as a guide, bends the instrument to connect it to the bow. The player achieves the desired sound by inserting their fingers between the bow hair and a piece of wood.
The Kamanche can be tuned over a wide range, which provides a technical advantage.
The lowest can be La – Re – La – Re as well as Re – Sol – Re – Sol .
Some players prefer to use medium-tension strings. While less common, some prefer to play like a violin. There are various tuning options, and ultimately, the player's taste determines the final pitch.
